Believe it or not, the holidays are right around the corner. It’s not too early to start thinking about entertaining your family and friends with a festive meal. In addition to planning your menu, don’t forget to spend some time designing the table setting.
The way you set your table will make your guests feel welcome and comfortable, and will encourage lively conversation and fun times! Here are three steps to help you create the perfect table setting.
How to Set the Perfect Table
- Table linens: Table linens add a touch of softness to your table. At a minimum, linens on the table should include a placemat or charger, as a base for the place setting, and a cloth napkin for each place setting. If you are interested in adding more fabric to your table, you could also add a table runner or table cloth. Table linens should coordinate with the color and pattern of your place settings and décor.
- Place settings: Once you have chosen your table linens, set each place setting with dinner and salad plates, silverware, and glassware. A quick internet search will show you many different ways to arrange these items, but the general rule of thumb is forks to the left of the plate and knife and spoons to the right.
- Finishing touches: Once you have all the settings in place, now is the time to decorate your table. Take your menu into consideration when deciding on decorations, and try to stick to one or two complementary colors. Keep your centerpiece decorations low in height to encourage conversation between guests across the table from one another. Don’t forget to leave space for any condiments such as salt and pepper and butter dishes that will need to be placed on the table.
Welcoming family and friends into your home is one of the best parts of the holidays, albeit a little stressful. With a little planning, setting the table will be a stress-free part of the day that can even be done ahead of time, leaving the rest of the day for you to prepare a delicious meal and entertain your family and friends.
